A New Beginning Hike

Apek Hill hike on Saturday, 12 May 2018 ... This morning, there were a few groups of hikers gathered at the trailhead of Apek Hill for hiking: Leng and Tony' group, Elaine's group, and KC and ChanHN's group. Everyone was in an elevated mood with the change of a new government headed by Tun Dr Mahathir after GE14. Most of us hiked via the extended trails passing by the water-gate. This would be my forth time hiking at the extended trails since April 2018.

Gunung Liang Day Hike

Gunung Liang East and West on Saturday 19 May 2018 ... Team Lead for this trip was Leng; this was my second hike to Gunung Liang.

We started the hike at 6:15 am. On the average, it took 6 hours to arrive at the peak, and 4 hr 15 min to return to carpark. Round trip was almost 12 hours.

 The second group photo ... total group size is 27 hikers

It was cloudy the entire day with sign of impending rain but did not manage to rain at Gunung Liang areas. It turned out to be a good day for hiking. The ground was wet after the previous day's rain. And the lower ground before the river crossing was infested with leeches – almost all were attacked by leeches. At the campsite next to the river crossing, that area was also full of leeches. The river crossing was simple with low water level. Unlike my first trip, after descending from peak, we were stuck for two hours trying to cross the river with rising water level. Doclick hereto read.
 Claudia crossing the river with LimHY stabilising the rope

With the puasa month, there were only a few other hikers other than our group.

Due to the long distance and the different pace of the hikers, we hiked in different groups. Most of the time, LimHY and I were with Alice Wong, Amy, Josephine, May Lim, Caryn Ng and Claudia.

The terrain is quite similar to Gunung Nuang from Pangsoon: the first level before the river crossing was undulating but not much elevation gain; the second level arriving at Camp 7E was a gradual climb; and the third level to the peak was much steeper climb that required both hands to pull one up.
 At Camp 7E ... the is the only piece of flat land before the steep ascent to the peak
 At Liang East peak ... LimHY, SC Yong, Dr Kogulan
 LimHY and KC Leong ... The scenery of the peak is unique: Liang East is the normal peak with a small clearing; but Liang West, just 10 minutes away, is totally of different landscape.
 The mossy forest of Liang West
At Camp 7E while returning from the peak ... Amy, Josephine, May Lim, Caryn Ng, Claudia

One effective way to ward off leeches which I have tested: wet and rub 999 Chlorophyll Soap on to the hiking shoes. The soap provides a slippery layer for the leeches to cling on. With the chemical contains in the soap, leeches that climb on to the shoes are rendered inactive that can be easily deflect by using a stick.

From the daily rain until 1 Jun 2018 where we were forced to cancel our Pine Tree Trail hike at Fraser's Hill due to landslide, the weather suddenly changed to dry period, and it has not been raining for one week. So a week before the coming Hari Raya long holidays and a dry period seemed to be a good time to hike in this trail again.

 The standard instruction before the start of any hike ... take group photo

I like it when the hike was according to plan: we hiked to the peak in 3 hours (the slowest arrived in 4 hours), relaxed at the waterfall, returned to trailhead 30 minutes ahead of schedule, and we have a good dinner this time in rewarding ourselves for a good hike amid good camaraderie.
The first obstacle course at the trailhead

The previous hike via Janda Baik was on 18 July 2015 during the Hari Raya long holidays – almost three years ago. I could still remember vividly that the group returned to trailhead carpark at 6pm. We drove excitedly to the Chinese restaurants in Kampung Bukit Tinggi, and we were surprised that all were packed to the brim. And we could not have a nice dinner.

With Jack Oh as Team Lead, we did a trail run at Setia Alam Community Forest (SACF of Shah Alam) on Friday 15 June 2018 – first day of Hari Raya holiday.

Started at Entrance A at 7:15 a.m., the group went through the following trails: MOU trail, The Wall, Sapu Tangan trail, Station C, Station B, Station B1, Sapu Tangan Peak (with a huge wooden tower), Station A, Taman Bukit Bayu, Lake, connect back to Station B; and returned via the Sapu Tangan trail for a total duration of 4 hours.

The trails were nice to run with uphill and downhill that balanced with long stretch of flat terrain. Overall it was a good trail run.

The group then went for a delicious lunch at the famous bak kut teh in Klang. We then adjourned for coffee drinks but the shop was not opened on a holiday; we have rojak and ais kacang drinks instead.

Trail run at Bukit Kiara on Sunday, 17 June 2018 ... Led by Kelly Hoh, the trail run was delayed to start at 7:40 a.m. due to continuous rain, and ended the outing at 12:25 p.m. with a total time of 4 hr 45 min. We were in the drizzle for two hours.

Being a long-distance trail runner, Kelly Hoh led the team traversing to those tough trails: Tokong Trail, Iron Window Trail, Pencala link, Hilltop trail, Kampung house in Segambut dalam (which is now flatten for construction), Container Trail, Jamban Trail, Prison Trail, and then to waterfall. Thanks to Kelly Hoh for leading the pack; we truly enjoyed the run.

Bukit Kledang Hike Part 2

After a dim sum breakfast at Menglembu town, we arrived at the Kledang Hill trailhead at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, 1 July 2018. Parking at the car park was full to the brim, and we have to park our cars at the housing area. The Team Lead for the hike were June and Tiger Chee. Accompanying us was June's adorable labrador dog, Baileys. Whenever Baileys saw any pool, it would jump into the water to cool itself. And it was such a joy seeing Baileys playing in the water. Special thanks to ChanHN in arranging for Team Leads and good food in Menglembu and Ipoh.

 Group photo at trailhead

Our target was to arrive at the peak where RTM transmission towers were located. All the trails are labelled with the unique numbers and not names (for example Ah Meng trail). We followed Trail 5.4 and then Trail 5.8 or RTM Trail to the peak.

The first part of the trails was fairly flat running in a criss-cross pattern with the streams. After the stream area, the terrain was going uphill and steeper terrain all the way to the peak. Standing at 808m or 2651 feet, one way to the peak is around 2hr 15 min.

 Baileys enjoying itself in the water

With 30 minutes rest at the peak, we descended the hill via tar road. After 30 minutes, we entered the trails again via Trail 5.4 passing by a giant tree. Round trip was about 5 hours with time spent on photos shoot. By the time we returned to the trailhead car park, the car park was almost empty. I was told that most locals or the regulars would not hike for such long hours.

The trails there are pleasant to hike; difficulty level is probably a few times more difficult than Apek Hill Cheras in Kuala Lumpur.

Hiking Kledang Hill at Menglembu, Ipoh ... We started our journey excitedly from Kuala Lumpur on Saturday 30 June 2018 at 7:30 a.m. En route to Ipoh, we stopped at Lata Kinjang waterfall of Tapah for photos shoot. After having lunch at Kong Heng coffeeshop in Ipoh, we walked around Concubine Lane. We later checked-in at MC Homestay in Menglembu; free-and-easy in preparing for the hike the following morning.

Kundasang Holiday

Together with Zhineng qigong members and friends, we went for a 5D4N holiday trip to the cool mountains of Kundasang (Kota Kinabalu), and the white sandy beaches of Manukan and Sapi Islands from 6 to 10 July 2018. We stayed two nights in Kundasang and two nights in Kota Kinabalu. Excluding Air Asia flight tickets, total amount spent for food, accommodation and transport was RM900 per person.

While overnight at DreamWorld Resort, the wind was blowing strongly the whole night. A few of the team members could not sleep well due to the rattling sound of the glass-panel door. I tried leaving a 1cm gap between the two glass-panel door, and that produced howling sound. According to a member of DreamWorld Resort staff, July and August would experience strong wind in Kundasang.

 DreamWorld Resort ... good view overlooking the Kundasang town

At the jetty for islands hopping (Manukan Island, Sapi Island, etc), there were many Chinese and Korean tourists – a good sign for the Sabah tourism industry. At the Philippines night market, 1kg of mangosteen sells for RM35, and 1kg of mango sells for RM25 – almost four times the price as in Kuala Lumpur.

Overall it was a nice and pleasant short holidays where one experiences "from the mountain base (not 'top') to the ocean beach (not 'deep')". If you would like to go, I can provide good information to you.

Pine Tree Trail Hike

Hiking Pine Tree Trail and overnight at High Pines Bungalow in Fraser's Hill from 20-22 July 2018 ... July is a dry and hot month in Klang Valley; as such, staging a 3D2N stay in the cool mountains and hiking Pine Tree Trail was an excellent idea.

DoCLICK HERE to view photos courtesy of yours truly, KC Leong.
 Looking for tarantula spiders ... one of the tarantula species is found only at this hill resorts and nowhere else in the world

That was my first time staying in High Pines Bungalow, a cosy greystone bungalow owned by Boh Plantations group. This lovely Scottish design bungalow sits at one of the highest spots in Fraser's Hill with good views of the surrounding mountains, and is frequently engulfed in low clouds. The best part is that it is only a stone's throw away from the trail head of Pine Tree Trail.
 Relax after dinner in High Pines Bungalow with good hiking company

As usual, many hikers felt that the returning journey of Pine Tree Trail hike was also tiring as the terrain was not all downhill descent. One still has to climb two major flights of stairs and a final uphill hike to return to the trail head.

Timing:
Start hiking = 7:30 a.m.
One way to the first peak = 2.5 hr to 3 hr;
First peak to 2nd peak = 30 to 45 min;
Round trip is about 7 hours.
A cool and misty morning at High Pines Bungalow

High Pines Bungalow (Fraser's Hill) ... It was a coincidence that the caretaker, Mr Tan, was admitted to hospital. The wife who does not cook, was in-charged.  Most of the group members opined that his wife was too petty, nasty and giving us a hard time (that affected the mood of the stay) even though we paid for the 3D2N accommodation: she was overly concern that we must not dirty the place; that we could not use the crockery (not even the cups!!); that we could not boil water for drinking; that we must not bring food and consume in the bungalow; that we could not do this or that, etc. Suggesting that we should eat our food in the garden, she said but subject to the gardener's permission. But a check at the garden, there was no table and chairs to put the food. We wonder who set the rules!

A group member commented that with years taking charge of the bungalow/property, they felt that visitors are encroaching into their territory; hence, imposing rules that disregard even basic needs.
 At the front gate of High Pines Bungalow ... I have been hiking at Pine Tree Trail for almost 10 times but I have never cross this boundary.

At the entrance of Jeriau Waterfall, we met six trail runners who ran/hiked from the Pine Tree trail head and returned via another run-able trail that connected to this Jeriau Waterfall (light-blue line above). Does anyone know this new trail, do kindly share information. We are having plan to explore this trail. This shorter or slightly easier trail would enable the day hike to Semangkok Peak be completed within daytime.

CULTRA 2018

The Cameron Ultra-trail (CULTRA) race started at 6:15 a.m. as planned on Saturday 28 July 2018 for the 30km category that I took park. After the first kilometre run on tar road passing by Tanah Rata main road, all runners were directed into the trails. While waiting in darkness at the narrow trail trying to clear the queue, I could see the strings of light going up the hills illuminated from runners' headlamps.

Do CLICK HERE to view photos courtesy of yours truly, KC Leong. In the photo album, click "i"(info) for the descriptions of each photo.

Vibrant sunset viewed from Greenhill Resort Apartment, Tanah Rata where we have a comfortable and pleasant stay for 3D2N; it is only 600 meters to the starting line.

Looking up the hills, the terrain was similar to hiking trails – steep slope and with lots of roots on the ground. The running trails in this event were actually trails meant for hiking, and not the rolling hills type. True to the elevation map, the Jasar and Berembun peaks were tough hills to overcome. The most satisfying moment was descending from the Berumbun peak where at certain stretches, it was run-able going downhill. With the hiking experience, I picked up the momentum and overtook almost 30 trail runners.

Yours truly crossing the finishing line in 7hr 12 min, another 48 min to cut-off time
With ChongYF, the running buddy

At check-point #3 and after passing by Robinson waterfall, all runners maneuvered down a steep slope. I saw a young lady (three runners in front of me) slipped and rolled down the slope and fell almost 10 feet below the trail. Luckily, her group of male runner friends where there to lend their helping hands. Another tough moment was to arrive at check-point #4 where the runners have to run uphill on tar road all the way to Boh Heritage Tea Centre and Factory at Habu.

Sunday 29 July, 8am having breakfast at Tanah Rata cheering 100km runners dashing to the finishing line

Overall, it was a good trail running event amidst the fresh and cool mountainous air of Cameron Highlands. The organizing standard of the organizer was good and is almost on par with other international trail running events.

Trophies and sports products/vouchers for the podium finishers

What I like:

a. well-organized event (dissemination of information via online and internet, systematic collection of race packs, big number of volunteers);

b. clear signage showing the direction with volunteers stationed at critical junctions (even camping in the jungle);

c. water stations with ample supply of drinking water, isotonic drinks, hot tea, oranges and dates; certain critical check-points even provided porridge.

The trail runners and supporter

Areas for Improvement:

a. after the first kilometre run on tar road, all runners were directed to narrow hiking trails; most runners would have wasted valuable time waiting to clear the queue;

b. at one tar road T-junction after emerging from Berumpun peak (just before check-point #3), the signage showed: 15km with an arrow going straight. Then what happened to the other categories, turning right? (we found out later that turning right was the wrong way)

Prize giving ceremony and the cheering crowd

c. with the tremendous enthusiasm from runners trying to register in this event where the window for registration was closed permanently after 15 minutes, many of the trail runners were not able to participate. The organizer may look at increasing the number of participants or a systematic way in selecting the participants.

Imagine a white sandy campsite located just next to a riverbank, and next to the campiste is the edge of the millions year-old tropical rainforests. We were camping at this unique campsite for the 3D2N, back-to-nature experience at Kuala Tahan in Taman Negara from 22 to 24 September 2018.

 Arriving at the campsite

The Kuala Tahan experience was really an enjoyable one. I told Encik Adi, the friendly organizer who speaks fluent English, that we would come back again during dry weather, with a bigger group. It is a lot of work for the organizer who would undertake to set up the community tent and cook for the team members. He also planned and synchornized with the boatmen to take the group to the various parts of the national park. Encik Adi can be contacted at +6011 3756 2106.
 The community tent set up by Encik Adi (left) and for cooking use

Activities and experiences:

a. Camping  a wonderful and peaceful experience camping at this nice campsite;

b. Canopy Walk – strolled along this long suspension bridge on the treetops high above the ground, termed as one of the world's longest and highest canopy walks;

c. Bukit Teresek – hiked up one of the trails where one can see Gunung Tahan;

d. Dark-brown reflection of the water – a unique sight of Tahan River;

e. Boat cruise to Lata Berkoh – exciting boat journey where the boatmen would steer the longboat to avoid hitting the huge rocks and big fallen tree trunks submerged under the shallow water;
 Getting ready to visit the Taman Negara national park

f.  Lata Berkoh cascades – relaxed in the water and enjoyed the rapids while having our tea and snacks there;

g. Kelah Sanctuary Lubok Tenor – feeding the many big fishes at the sanctuary area;

h. Visit Bateq Tribe orang asli settlement – watched demonstrations of traditional hunting methods using blow pipes, and setting up fire the nature way. The orang asli speak Bahasa M'sia; they have dark skin with short and tight curly hair, and live a nomadic lifestyle in Taman Negara;

i. Swimming in the river – anytime of the day for a true jungle experience.

Hornbills– it was a rare experience witnessing hornbills flying high above us, even higher than the tallest trees. First, we could hear the unique and loud chirp even before they arrived. Looking into the sky, we could see the three birds flying in a straight line, almost of the same distance apart. In the evening around 7:00 p.m., the three birds would return home by flying in southward direction; and at 7:00 a.m. the following morning, they would fly in westward direction – exactly of the same flight path. We quipped that they were going to office to work in the morning, and flying home in the evening guided by their in-built GPS navigation system.

As to the WIFI service, the data line-speed at many of the lodges was slow. The toilet walls are plastered with tiles that give a pleasant looking; they do have the squatting and sitting type.

Hot-water Bath – Most of the lodges use solar-powered heating elements to heat up the tank of water, and charged 200 Nepalese Rupee per hot-water bath. A few of the team members complained that the water was not hot at all for a comfortable bath at the end of a trekking day.
 Boarding the plane to Pokhara

Food – There is a good system of itemise the menu, consistently applicable to almost all of the lodges. That would make ordering easier. Since we were not eating meat when trekking, ordering of food was mostly confined to noodle, rice, fried-rice, momo, vegetable, potato, pizza, vegetable curry or soup. The Korean instant noodle, which was very popular among the lodges, was really hot and spicy.

Lighting – all lodges use energy-saving light bulbs that lighted up the entire lodge and rooms. A few of the team members were puzzled asking me why there was headlamp in my checklist. Ten years ago when I went trekking in Nepal, we need headlamps to move around at night.

 Descending the mountains from Annapurna Base Camp

As I understand from the mountain guide, there are three types of packages when trekking in Annapurna Base Camp trek:

(a) Bed only (breakfast, lunch and dinner are paid as one eats);
(b) Bed and breakfast (lunch and dinner are paid as one eats);
(c) Full board (includes all meals, hot water drink and bath).

All the above packages include mountain guide and porters services. Choice (a) and (b) would be the cheapest in term of package fees, but one has to calculate and pay every time when ordering food and hot water drink, which is inconvenience especially at high altitude that may affect the brainwork.
 Glow of Fishtail peak during the sunset at Dovan

On behalf of the team members, I would like to thank the excellent service provided by trekking agent, Mr Cheban Devkota of Manaslu Adventure Treks (Pvt.) Ltd; the mountain guide, Mr Ram; assistant guide, Sunal, and his team of strong and handsome porters.
 The lodge in Dovan is equipped with TV (that can received BBC broadcasting), electric heater, and a refrigerator (not in the photo).
